Annual Banquet An Inspiring Success
--by April Swe

On Saturday, February 2, 2008, our family attended our first Paik’s Martial Arts banquet. While we had a vague idea of what to expect, we were truly shocked and amazed at what actually transpired throughout the afternoon. Since we are still fairly new to the school, less than a year, this was our first opportunity to experience a banquet here. We have, over the past 2 years, been to several other martial arts banquets so we thought we knew what we were getting into and, honestly, we were initially not all that excited. Most banquets, honestly, are pretty mundane and boring.

WOW! We could not have been any more off the mark. The banquet started off with a nice luncheon and the opportunity to get to know one another on a more intimate level. The fact that it was a sit-down meal made it all the more peaceful and the bonus factor that the dessert was a wonderful chocolate mousse made the children immensely happy. After the meal the excitement began and it never let up, not even for a second. The pace and intensity of the afternoon was astounding. Master Paik gave out many awards to the students. He not only gave out awards to the actual “winners,” he also acknowledged every individual who was nominated for an award with a certificate of recognition. Further, the awards were not only for those who “excelled” in the martial arts with regard to form or sparring or technique. They recognized students who made marked improvement throughout the year, who showed strong leadership skills, who made regular attendance a priority, who make a commitment to stretching and increasing their flexibility, who had a positive attitude, who worked hard the vast majority of the time, who overcame great hardship to make great strides, and the like. In addition, he acknowledged families who went out of their way to make a commitment to the school and to embody the true meaning of a martial arts family. This banquet just reconfirmed for me Master Paik’s strong belief that all students, regardless of natural ability, are equally worthy and have the ability to reach new heights with commitment, the right attitude, and a warrior spirit. Jacob, Maya, and I were truly honored to have been a part of such a great event. I feel certain that every one left that banquet feeling like the winner that they are.

Just when we thought we had experienced it all, there were the demonstrations. What can I say? In between the many awards presentations, several demonstrations were put on by many different students and teams from the school. This was one of our favorite parts of the program. The demos ranged from funny skits to some amazing presentations by the Bushido club to a powerful group of adult black belts to a marvelous form called Ja Yoo (Freedom) done to the theme of Exodus. They then included a beautiful musical presentation of the form Uun Myung (Destiny) done to Beethoven's 5th symphony by a group of 4 young black belts, two very graceful soft-style martial arts forms, a fierce showdown between 2 gentlemen in a padded-weapons sparring duel, a karate team form demonstration of the form Bassai Sho, and a very moving rendition of the team musical form Mee Guuk (America) to God Bless America. And then there was the amazing solo musical form called, “The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly” performed by one of the most amazing teenage black belts that I have ever had the pleasure to witness in action. It literally brought tears to my eyes. The fact that the participants in these demonstrations ranged in age from 6 years of age to almost 50 years of age was amazing to me.

Lastly, the big event of the afternoon was the final match of the Master’s Cup team sparring competition. Apparently, this was the first time in several years that the #1 and #2 ranked teams actually met up in the Finals. Wiley’s team, the Dragons, met up against Trent’s team, UltiMax, to see who would be crowned this year’s champion. It was an incredible match up. Both teams fought remarkably well. Everyone in the room was at the edge of their seats. Adrenaline was pumping. While, in the end, there could only be one winner, the match itself epitomized the spirit of team work and team spirit. What a Day!
